Current Skincare Routine
I have a skincare obsession. I’m nowhere near a pro, but I love it all nonetheless. Most of the accounts I follow are beauty and skincare bloggers who post stunning photos of their insanely gorgeous vanities. However, being obsessed with skincare wasn’t always the case for me — I was more into makeup than anything until about 5 years ago.
I remember first wearing makeup when I was 12. I had started getting my period and my face was breaking out because my hormones were out of control and I had no idea what to do other than cover the problem with caked on drugstore powder foundation. As I got older, the type of makeup I would use changed to cover whatever skin issue I was having. As long as my acne and acne scars weren’t visible, I was confident.
After meeting Manny, he shared that he’s not the biggest fan of makeup, he preferred my natural skin. Now let me tell you something, that was a hard fucking pill to swallow. How could he like my skin? He’s always moisturized, pore-less and has cheekbones to die for and I’m over here with pimples, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Nah, nope, no can do. I couldn’t quite give up makeup, so I opted for tinted moisturizers and light foundations that looked more like skin than anything else. It was strange to realize that even though the tinted moisturizers didn’t do much, I felt better knowing I had something on my face. That’s when I realized that this was more psychological than I thought.
It was a journey and truth be told, it still is, to realize that my skin insecurities run deep. I’m talking about the bottom of the ocean deep. There are some days that are better than others but for the most part, it’s what I obsess over. Whenever I see people walking down the street or people on social media, I’m in awe of people who have flawless skin, pore-less skin, barely any breakouts, skin that foundation just glides on, the whole nine. I’m obsessed. I’M OBSESSED. I’ve become hyper-aware of my obsession and have been able to use that to cope with my skin and learn to better my skin so that I can feel my most beautiful.
For a very long time, I was harsh to myself because of my skin — I would shame myself into thinking that people were staring at my breakouts or my scars whenever we would speak. I was afraid that people would think I was unhygienic because of my breakouts. I was terrified of people being disgusted with me because of how awful I thought I looked. I was afraid of being a cat-fish because I had filtered all my photos but in person, I wasn’t that pore-less, baby smooth, dewy-skinned girl. I think once you realize that maybe it’s not entirely attainable to have the same type of skin as our genetically blessed friends, you do what you can to keep your skin as clear, as hydrated, as treated and as lovely as possible.
I had to do a lot of work to be able to love my skin, flaws and all. I’m still not where I want to be, but we’re all a work in progress. If you’re perfect, what’s there to work for? Now while I’m not at Manny Montana high cheek bones, sexy smooth, beautiful skin — I can share some tips on how to get Adelfa Marr’s hydrated, manageable breakouts, somewhat visible pores but happy girl skin. Here’s my skincare routine for the daytime and the nighttime:
DAYTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE:
I rarely do a morning cleanse because I realized it was stripping my skin, so I’ll often use cold/warm water to rinse my face and use a towel to dry. I always make sure to keep my face towel separate from the one I use on my body. It’s helped me so much to do this and it’s one of my most prized skincare tips. Next up, I’ll tone my skin with COSRX AhA/BHA Toner, follow up with my Sunday Riley U.F.O Oil, then add on my Vinter’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum. To moisturize, I love using my Leo Oil and if I’m in need of some extra hydration, I’ll mix it with Stratia’s Liquid Gold. Lastly, I’ll add in some of Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Glow Drops if I’m in need of that extra glow. I’ve been harder on myself to use sunscreen more often because I’m an ultimate slacker, but my favorite is the Unseen Sunscreen by Supergoop. For lip balm, I love to use the DedCool x Leowithcancer Plump Chazstick because it glides on perfectly and leaves my lips feeling extremely soft and beautiful.
NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE:
I’m a night shower kind of person, so I love to do my skincare right after I shower. I cleanse with Sunday Riley’s Ceramic Slip and follow up with a double cleanse with La Roche Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser. Most days I’ll use the Dr. Dennis Gross’ Extra Strength Daily Peel Pads and whenever I need that extra exfoliation, I’ll use Biologique Recherche P50. I’ll follow this up with my Sunday Riley U.F.O Oil, then add on my Vinter’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum again and as of lately I’ve been adding the Dr. Dennis Gross Dark Spot Correcting Serum. For moisture and hydration, I’ll layer on my Stratia’s Liquid Gold with a couple of drops of Leo Oil. I finish off with my DedCool x Leowithcancer Plump Chazstick and my Aesop Intensive Rejuvenate Body Balm mixed with Necessaire The Body Lotion.
I tend to stick to the same routines and switch it up if I feel my skin is either too dry, too oily, experiencing hormonal breakouts, etc., but as of late, this is my most adored routine. This may absolutely NOT work for everyone and it’s not meant to, but I hope you find some products in the routine that suit your skin’s needs and tailor it into your skincare regimen. It’s beautiful to take some time and show your skin some serious love. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water throughout the day and love yourself even more.
